I had a list of golfers I wanted to get photos of while photographing the 3M Open this year. The crowds for 8:30 in the morning were pretty good and I had to bob around and duck under ropes (since I had full access to the tournament) to get into position. My angle from the right side of the first tee box was good, except for the garbage bags that are on the tee box. Could I Photoshop them out? Sure I could. They’re probably only distracting to me, so I’ve left them in. Cameron Champ and Akshay Bhatia were paired up on Saturday and I knocked out two of the golfers in one tee time. Akshay hit driver off of the first tee and Cameron hit a 3 wood.
I also followed around America’s Public Enemy #1, Zach Johnson. Coming off of captaining a losing Ryder Cup team, there was a lot of negativity around him. The Minnesota fans were pretty nice and I didn’t hear much more than a couple mumbles about him being the captain. I did get some shots of Zach on different holes, but I was camped out on the first tee (having moved to the left side of the tee box) to get a couple tee shots of some of the groups who were set up in consecutive tee times.
Zach was paired up with Harry Hull and my underdog pick, Jake Knapp. Jake ended up WD’ing due to an injury, but it was fun to see him playing as he seems like a guy who really has fun out on the course.
It ended up being a short say on the course as we had a family commitment in the afternoon and I headed out shortly before 11am to get home and get ready.
You can find my recaps of Round 1 HERE and Round 2 HERE. Hoping that round 4 doesn’t take me a few months to get together.
